The Open Swahili Localization Project (aka Kilinux) was appointed as winner of the category Education with the following motivation:
"It supports the learning process for many people living in Central & Eastern Africa. People who were previously were forced to learn in a foreign language can now learn in their own language. It further opens up for the use of ICT and office software suites from K12 to higher education and the scientific community. It is a strongly innovative project, which uses Open Software to widen the knowledge and learning possibilities in a major African language and encourages the scientific community to engage in community development."
